Another 14 Peterborough restaurants you might remember

We are still in Lockdown Three, but we can now look forward to when our favourite place to eat reopens – even if for a while we might have to sit outside!

But here I take a look back at some of the restaurants we have loved and lost in Peterborough down the years - it is part 2 of a feature that started last week.

I TOSCANINI was a big draw in Eye village for more than a decade. It is now Mattoni, of course.

IMPERIAL BENTO on Broadway was once the place to go for top Chinese food. That is now Gurkha Durbaar, a Nepalese and Indian restaurant.

GASTON, launched by the late, great Peter Boizot next to the theatre on Broadway, later became the exotic Malayba (featured in part 1), although it is currently a charity shop.

ROYAL SPICE on Park Road was probably the first Indian restaurant I stuck with after moving to Peterborough. One of the first stylish, modern Indian restaurants it is now a Lithuanian bar and restaurant.

LATINIS (under the hotel) brought a taste of South America to New Road, while CHIMICHANGA brought the tastes and smells of Mexico to Church Street in the city centre, and is now Five Guys.

THE BEEHIVE, in Albert Place, was a firm favourite for the gastropub crowd (it is now a shisha bar). And what about the original BOMBAY BRASSERIE – before Rony Choudhury moved across the road in 2004 to its current home- and his place on Park Road, PLANET PAPADOM.

Let’s not forget SAFFRON, another fine Indian on Broadway; MELILLO’S with its Gem bar upstairs on Lincoln Road, now a dessert lounge; CARLUCCIO’S, was a “big name” drawn to the city in Cumbergate and is now the Tap & Tandoor Indian gastropub; ASK, another big name, in Priestgate, came and went; and last but not least LOCH FYNE at Elton for fish lovers everywhere.
