Since opening in 2024, the volunteer-run museum has become a popular destination for aviation enthusiasts, local history lovers and families alike.
Housed on the former RAF King's Cliffe technical site, the museum tells the story of the airfield and the British, Commonwealth and American personnel who served there during the Second World War through an impressive collection of original artefacts, photographs, documents and personal memorabilia.
The Summer Open Day – on Sunday 9 August – offers much more than a museum visit. Visitors can enjoy live music courtesy of The Starlight Sisters, explore a display of pre-1945 military and civilian vehicles, meet local heritage organisations and chat with knowledgeable volunteers who are passionate about preserving the airfield's history.
The museum also tells the story of RAF King's Cliffe's role in the Allied air campaign and its connection with the United States Army Air Forces' 20th Fighter Group. Visitors can discover the fascinating history of the airfield, including its association with Glenn Miller, who gave his final UK performance at King's Cliffe shortly before his disappearance in December 1944.
Museum founder Mike Murray said: "Our Summer Open Day is a chance for people of all ages to discover the incredible history on their doorstep. Whether you're interested in aviation, military history, classic vehicles or simply looking for an enjoyable day out, there's something for everyone. We're proud to keep the stories of RAF King's Cliffe alive and look forward to welcoming both returning visitors and those discovering the museum for the first time.
"The museum would also like to acknowledge the invaluable support of Rockingham Forest Holiday Park, which has played a major role in its success since opening. By providing the museum with a permanent home on the former RAF King's Cliffe site and supporting its work to preserve and interpret the historic features of the airfield, the Holiday Park has helped ensure this important chapter of local and wartime history can be shared with visitors for generations to come."
The museum has attracted visitors from across the UK and overseas, earning praise for its friendly volunteers and engaging displays. Every visit helps support the museum's ongoing work to preserve the history of RAF King's Cliffe for future generations.
The Summer Open Day takes place between 10am and 4pm at King's Cliffe Airfield Museum, Wansford Road, King's Cliffe, PE8 6FR. Refreshments will be available, there is no entry charge, but donations are welcomed.
