When you consider that Peterborough Cathedral is more than 900 years old, it’s hard to imagine what life was like back then.
If you go back even further, say 3,500 years, you’d reach the Bronze Age, when Peterborough’s Flag Fen was constructed.
Now imagine stepping back in time 150 million years. That’s right, one hundred and fifty million years.
It surely seems inconceivable that we could possibly be able to see and touch something that old, but that’s not the case.
In fact, in a small, unassuming building off March High Street, members of the public experience some of the UK’s oldest fossils for themselves.
As the name suggests, Fossils Galore is packed with thousands of rare fossils; some dating back hundreds of millions of years,
Featuring fossils dating back to the Triassic Period - a mind-boggling 200 million years ago - the museum is run by paleontologist Jamie Jordan alongside his partner, Sarah.
On the ground floor of the museum is a shop where visitors can buy items such as dinosaur bone chunks, ammonites and fish teeth.
Many of the museum’s exhibits are featured on the floors above, where visitors can come within inches of mammoth tusks and dinosaur skeletons.
But for many the museum’s wow-factor can be found on the second floor in the shape of Fossils Galore’s in-house preparation laboratory.
Here visitors can watch live demonstrations of the painstaking process undertaken by Jamie and his team to protect historic artefacts.
Now in its 14th year, Fossils Galore continues to educate and fascinate visitors by taking them back hundreds of millions of years.
