The Get Peterborough Moving campaign is encouraging more people to start exercising to improve their physical and mental fitness.
The campaign comes as data has revealed 14.20 per cent of people in the city are obese – above the national average (based on the number of people listed on GP registers and the number of people recorded as having the relevant health conditions.)
The city council said: “People who are active are less likely to develop serious illnesses like heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, dementia and even some cancers. Moving your body helps keep your heart, bones and muscles strong, your blood sugar in check, and your weight within a healthy range. This all adds up to a lower risk of chronic diseases and a greater chance of enjoying life to the full as you age.
“But it’s not just about living longer; it’s about living better. Regular movement helps keep your muscles strong, your joints flexible, and your mind sharp. That means you’re more likely to stay independent and enjoy everyday activities - whether that’s gardening, playing with your grandchildren, or travelling.
“Research has found that even small increases in activity can have a big impact. For example, swapping 30 minutes of sitting with 30 minutes of walking each day can cut your risk of early death by up to 20%. The message is clear: every step really does count towards a longer, healthier life.
“So, if you’re looking to give yourself the best chance of a long and happy life, get moving! It’s one of the simplest and most effective ways to invest in your future health.
