The Larch Grove Social Club paid for the device with money raised over the course of a year through a range of activities that included jumble sales, fetes and raffles.

The club has around 35 members, many of whom live in the retirement housing nearby.

Treasurer Virginia Middleton said: “We all held a private vote on how we should spend club funds and the defibrillator won.

Community is important to us. Until recently, there would be meetings every night and we offer bingo sessions, card nights, film and music afternoons and billiards amongst others. Our motto is that nobody should be alone.”

The defibrillator is now in operation and can be used by anyone without prior training as there are instructions included on the device.

It can be used to save the life of someone having a cardiac arrest by sending an electric pulse to shock the heart.
