Tributes to much loved Peterborough healthcare assistant who died after catching COVID 19

Staff at Peterborough City Hospital are mourning the loss of much-loved Healthcare Assistant Bernard Meriales, who passed away after contracting the Covid-19 infection.

Bernard (48) who was known to his friends at the hospital as ‘Bong’ worked on Ward A8 and died on Monday 7 December at Addenbrookes’ Hospital in Cambridge.

Caroline Walker, Chief Executive Officer at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Peterborough City Hospital, said: “The news of Bernard’s death has come as a terrible shock to all who knew him. Our sincerest thoughts are with his wife Bev, who also works at PCH, their family and loves ones, plus the ward team on A8. Bernard was a popular member of the team and will be greatly missed.

“I am grateful to our chaplaincy team, our Occupational Health staff and Emotional Wellbeing Team who are supporting staff. We have set up a condolence book in our chapel where staff are leaving messages and memories that we hope will provide some comfort to Bernard’s loved ones over the coming weeks.”

Bernard’s funeral will take place on Monday 21 December at Peterborough Crematorium. Arrangements are currently being made for the funeral cortege to pass by Peterborough City Hospital so that staff can pay their respects.
