A spokesman for the chain told the Peterborough Telegraph: “This week we proactively decided to temporarily close our Peterborough Queensgate Centre restaurant as a precautionary measure following a rise of Covid-19 cases in the local area, with four of our employees testing positive.

“We immediately contacted all restaurant employees, as well as Public Health England and the Environmental Health Officer.

“Having taken a number of precautionary measures including a deep clean by an external organisation, we have now re-opened the restaurant with the full support of EHO and PHE.

“As with all of the decisions we have made across this unprecedented period, the safety of our people and customers has been our absolute priority.”

McDonald’s said it operates a number of safety measures to help keep staff safe, including Perspex screens, temperature checks at the start of each shift, maintaining a two metre distance from others as much as possible, face coverings, regular hand washing and the use of hand sanitiser.
