In a video address, Dr Liz Robin stressed the importance of looking after people's mental health and well being - but said 'any increase' in socialising in the days running up to the second lockdown could be counterproductive to the aims of the new restrictions.

She also urged everyone to stick to the new rules.

Dr Robin said: "The whole point of the proposed restrictions is to keep the number of people we have contact with to the absolute minimum.

"So rather than waiting until Thursday I would urge you to think about this as soon as possible. Any increase in socialising before the restrictions are due to start is likely to be counterproductive and could mean we have more transmission to deal with.

"As always we'll need to look after our mental health and well being for the next few weeks and support each other and vulnerable people in our communities.

"In order to do this safely we'll be providing more information about this in the coming days."
