Peterborough and Cambridgeshire COVID vaccination programme well above national average as tens of thousands of elderly residents get jab

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough's vaccination programme is one of the leading schemes in the country for getting elderly residents to have the jab, new figures show.

The percentage of people aged between 70 and 74, 75 and 79 and 80 and over who have received the first dose of the jab is above the national average - and for those aged in their 70s, well above the national average.

The figures from NHS England show that up to January 31, a total of 153, 641 doses (including nearly 6,000 second doses) have been given out in Peterborough and Cambridgeshire.

A total of 39,499 first doses have been given to people aged 80 and over - roughly 82.2 per cent of all people in that age group in the county. The national average is 88.1 per cent.

For people aged between 75 and 79. 27,950 doses have been given out - meaning 92.9 per cent of people in that age group have been reached. In England, the county lies second in the national tables for that age group, with the national average standing at 82.6,

For people aged 70-74, 25,201 doses had been given out, or 56.8 per cent of the population. The national average is 35.2 per cent.

There have also been 55,109 first doses given to those aged under 70, which includes front line health and social care workers.

A total of 1,016 second doses have been given to those aged under 70, 17 to those aged 70-74, four to those aged 75-79 and 4,845 (10.4 per cent) to those aged 80 and above.

As a percentage, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is below the national average for all age groups on second doses.

The latest data includes some vaccines given out at the new mass vaccination centre in Thorpe Road, which opened on January 25. Other mass vaccination hubs have now opened in other areas of the county.
