One man issued with fixed penalty notice for Covid breach after large gathering in Peterborough

Police have issued a fixed penalty notice to one man after being called to disperse a large gathering in Peterborough on Sunday (January 17).

Residents in Werrington reported seeing a large group of young people gathering close to the lake at Cuckoo’s Hollow nature reserve.

The group were then seen lighting lanterns as part of what was understood to be a memorial for a friend who had died.

Police arrived and dispersed most of the gathering.

Police have since confirmed that an 18-year-old was issued with a fixed penalty notice for failing to follow officers’ advice.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said: “We received a number of calls yesterday afternoon (January 17) with reports of a group of people gathering in an open area near Lakeside in Werrington, Peterborough.

“Officers attended and engaged with the group which resulted in most people dispersing from the area.

“One man, aged 18, was handed a fixed penalty notice after failing to follow advice.”
