The marshals, the majority of whom are being funded by the Government, have been speaking to residents, shoppers and businesses, offering advice and guidance about the national rules and what they can do to keep themselves and others safe while supporting with enforcement activity.

A Peterborough Telegraph reader, who has contacted the council about the rules breach, said: “It is utterly ridiculous that the people that are employed as Covid marshals can be seen flouting social distancing in public.”

A spokesperson for CSS Security, based in Wisbech, said: “Our Covid marshals are fully trained and we always stress the need for Covid safety. We expect them to always maintain the highest standards.

“The marshals’ relaxed approach to face coverings and apparently sitting too close to each other, whilst on break, is inexcusable and all concerned have been severely reprimanded.

“This one negative image should not tarnish the excellent proactive work carried out since the marshal programme commenced.

“Their presence on the streets of Peterborough has been received with a positive and thankful response by public and retailers.”

Peterborough is currently in Tier 4 for restrictions due to the coronavirus - the highest level possible.

A city council spokesperson said: “This breach has been reported to us and we have already picked it up with the company that supplies the marshals. We have asked for swift action to reinforce the guidelines and have had confirmation that this is being done.

“While our city is in Tier 4 we are asking you to observe public health guidelines to stay home and avoid mixing with anyone outside your household and, if you need to go out or work outside the home, to observe a strict two metre distance, wear a mask where appropriate and wash or sanitise your hands often.

“This goes for everyone who works for Peterborough City Council too, even if they are on a short term contract.

“We continue to remind them of the guidance and we will take swift action if breaches are reported to us.”
