Peterborough school unveils new stunning new remembrance mural

An outdoor area of Hampton Vale Primary Academy has been transformed to create a tribute dedicated to those who lost their lives in conflict.

Work on the project in the central courtyard began in December and has been completed just in time for Remembrance Day.

There are depictions of aircraft, soldiers, trenches and war rooms, a timeline of key events and even a tank bursting through the walls of the school.

The bulk of the artwork has been created by Peterborough based Street Arts Hire Ltd alongside graphic designers Twenty8Design, who have been supported by the school’s pupils, site team and art teacher. Personal touches from the school include the poppies and Anderson Shelter.

Street Arts Hire have also created a video showcasing the artwork and some of the history that inspired it, this can be viewed on their Facebook page.

The area will now be used to educate the school’s pupil’s on a key part of British history and will be used to support assemblies on Remembrance taking place today (November 11).

Deputy Headteacher, Helen Daniels, said: “The area is designed to inspire and motivate our children to learn about a key period of history. The theme of World War Two is taught in detail when the children are in year six.

“Our knowledge based environment supports our new curriculum. The space will be used to hold experience events and to immerse the children in life during world war two.

“The children will be having a remembrance day assembly in their classrooms tomorrow and images/videos of this area will be used to support the children’s thinking and reflection.

“We can’t wait for the area to be put to full use once covid restrictions ease.

“We are renovating lots of different areas around school to inspire and motivate our children - for example our new reading area ‘Wonderland.’”

A representative from Street Arts Hire Ltd added: “We took great honor in creating this space to help educate and think of all those that fought for the freedom of this country at its hardest of times.

Thanks to Hampton Vale Primary Academy for giving us the opportunity to be a part of such an honorable project. Lest We Forget.”
