Support worker goes the extra mile to help Peterborough man keep cooking

A Peterborough support worker has gone above and beyond to ensure that one of the individuals he supports can continue doing what he loves most — cooking.
Knowing how much Matthew enjoys cooking, staff at New Road wanted to make sure he didn’t miss out on his passion. He was instead offered the chance to take part in a sound and movement course, another of his interests as he loves to dance and play instruments.
Fortunately, Matthew Kavanagh, who has previous chef experience from working at another Salutem location, Kanner House in Plymouth, offered to host weekly cooking sessions. Each week, the pair plan a recipe, shop for ingredients, and cook together.
The sessions have quickly become a highlight of the week for Matthew R., who has continued to develop his culinary skills and confidence — and the two have formed a fantastic friendship along the way.
“Matthew really lights up when he’s cooking,” said Matthew Kavanagh. “It’s wonderful to see how proud he is of what he makes each week. I’m just glad I could help him keep doing something that means so much to him.”
Since joining the New Road team, Matthew Kavanagh has made a strong impression with his creativity and compassion, and it’s clear that he’s the ideal choice to become Matthew Robinson’s new keyworker.
John Godden, chief executive of Salutem Care and Education, said:
“This is a wonderful example of the person-centred support we strive for at Salutem. Matthew Kavanagh showed real initiative and kindness in making sure Matthew could continue to enjoy his passion. It’s about recognising what makes each person happy and fulfilled and making that possible.”
