Family Action’s Summer Fund delivers joy where it’s needed most

Families from the Family Action Cygnets Pre-School in Hampton Peterborough, were treated to a special summer event thanks to the Family Action Summer Fund.
Family Action’s Summer Fund provides families across the UK with access to activities, local events and days out that might otherwise be out of reach. These experiences are designed to help families build confidence, improve mental health, and connect with local communities.
At the Peterborough summer event children were introduced to a variety of animals, many for the first time, from Ark Farm. This summer celebration was a day of wellbeing, fun, and connection.
Family Action Pre-school Supervisor Kelly Hebdon said: “Lots of our children, especially those with additional needs, never get the opportunity to have real experiences with different animals and at this event we could all really see the joy in their eyes.”

One Mum who took part shared her experience: “When I have taken my son to the zoo before he couldn’t see anything as the animals are all too far away and due to Harry’s sight issues, he can’t see very much. So, to be able to be this up close to the animals and to feel them was a real benefit and a much more stimulating experience for him.”
One of the children at the event said: “I love them all so much, the tortoise had a banana, and I love bananas!”
Kelly Hebdon concludes: “We know that many families feel pressure to live up to the ideal of a ‘perfect summer’—filled with expensive holidays and non-stop activities. But for the families we support, even accessing the simple joys of the season can be a real challenge. Every family’s summer looks different, and it’s important to recognise the barriers they face—from financial hardship and health issues to anxiety and caring responsibilities. Through our Summer Fund, Family Action is helping to bring moments of joy, connection, and support to those who need it most.”
Family Action is committed to ensuring that no family feels left behind this summer. Through the Summer Fund, they are helping to create a more inclusive and compassionate community: one day out at a time.
