The supermarket chain said it had seen a huge rise in grocery deliveries and collections in the past month during the coronavirus pandemic.

And it said that a new “small building” at its supermarket next to the railway station would allow it to “significantly increase” the number of online deliveries it can make later this year.

If the plans are approved this would create 60 new permanent jobs.

The new facility would be situated in the service yard which in turn would extend into the existing customer car park, reducing the number of spaces.

However, under the plans there would be an increase in the number of parking spaces in the service yard itself.

A Waitrose spokesperson said: “We have already increased the availability of grocery delivery slots and collections by 50 per cent in the last month to help our Peterborough customers get the food and essentials they need during these challenging times.

“The application for a small building and additional parking spaces for our vans within the service yard would mean we could significantly increase the number of online deliveries we are able to make from later this year.

“We have recruited nearly 20 new partners in recent weeks to allow us to make more deliveries at present, and if this is approved we expect to create up to 60 further roles.”

The application will now be considered by the council.
