Burghley House may have seen a few Lords in its 450 year history, but this summer visitors will be able to ‘lord it up’ in a very different way as one of the UK’s most picturesque outdoor cinemas returns.

With Burghley House as the spectacular backdrop, five days and nights of fabulous films will transport cinemagoers from Middle Earth, and the chance to be a “Lord of the Rings”, to the world of Mary Poppins – via the Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters and Some Like It Hot!

Burghley Film Festival returns at the end of the month

The picturesque South Gardens will again be transformed into a magical outdoor movie venue for the annual film festival, this year running from Wednesday, July 29 until Sunday, August 2.

Launching the festival will be a day devoted to the hugely successful Lord of the Rings trilogy, with all three movies being screened during Wednesday. Thanks to separate pricing for each movie, Tolkien fans will be able to pick and choose, or see them all.

Burghley will become Middle Earth for a day with moviegoers encouraged to come in costume – whether that be a Lord of the Ring, an Orc, Troll or an Elven king – while the movies also offer a chance to see screen legend Christopher Lee (Saruman the White in the trilogy), who died last month, back on the Big Screen.

There are savings to be made right through until the end of July when on the gate tickets will cost £14 for adults and £7 children.

Book tickets online at or telephone 01780 752451.
