New harvest festival for Peterborough will feed 500 for free in square

The head chef at a top Peterborough restaurant will lead the feeding of the 500 at a new Harvest Festival which will promote local food suppliers.

Lee Clarke, head chef at Clarkes restaurant, will use locally sourced ingredients to prepare a meal for 500 guests in front of the Guildhall in Cathedral Square on Sunday, September 20.

The initiative is just one of many events taking place across two days for what organisers are promising will be a weekend of ‘art and culture’ that reinvigorates and transforms the ancestral ritual of Harvest and attracts thousands of people into the city centre.’

The event is being run by Peterborough arts group Metal which is collaborating with artists Lucy and Jorge Orta from Studio Orta in Paris to put on the special meal.

Since 2000, Studio Orta has designed thought provoking ‘Meals’ which bring people from different backgrounds together to eat and talk about specific issues.

Each meal is accompanied with specially commissioned art works, limited edition Royal Limoges porcelain plates and hand printed table runners.

The ‘70x7’ meal will see seven ‘ambassadors’ from diverse communities invite guests to join them, while another 70 pairs of tickets are also being given away in a lottery.

The Sunday meal is on the second day of the festival which also includes a food and craft market in St John’s Square between 10am and 4.30pm.

A market is also being held on the Saturday from 10am to 5pm and will include bread making demonstrations, musical and dance groups and a variety of folk musicians.

From 7pm in Cathedral Square, a free, non-ticketed ceilidh will begin with folk musicians, starting with blue grass style and working up to a full-on Gypsy Klezmer Turkish folk frenzy.

Bands will also be confirmed at a later date.
