Youth orchestra set for summer

Led by their musical director Robin Norman, assisted by specialist tutors in strings, woodwind, brass and percussion, the orchestra will hold an intensive course over four days (Aug 30 -Sept 2)at Ormiston Bushfield Academy.

The programme will include: Ludwig van Beethoven: Overture “Egmont”, Ralph Vaughan-Williams: “Fantasia on Greensleeves”, Sir Henry Wood: “Fantasia on British Sea Songs” plus many other classical favourites.

Lydia Cochrane, who plays the flute and took part in last year’s course, said: “It was an amazing course, and I really enjoyed it. I loved playing with other people, both of the same age and ability, meaning that I could make friends, and the pieces we played were fun, but also challenging.

“The resulting concert was of a high standard – we got lots of positive feedback from the audience saying that we sounded almost professional.

“ Although the course was very informal and fun, we still got a lot done, and learnt a lot about working in both a larger orchestra, and also, when doing sectionals, working in a much smaller group.”

The 2016 course will once again culminate in a special Gala Concert - “Music For A Summer’s Evening” – performed in St. John the Baptist Church, in Cathedral Square, on September 2 at 7.30pm. Tickets for the concert will be available from the Peterborough Visitor Information Centre, Bridge Street, Peterborough and cost just £5.00 with free seats for children and students.

Applications are currently being accepted from all woodwind, brass, percussion and string musicians who are at least Grade 6 standard and under 19 years of age. The closing date is July 1.
