Review: The Wizard of Oz at Sacrewell

A sell-out audience turned out for the latest open-air theatre presentation at Sacrewell Farm on Saturday, such is the draw of The Wizard of Oz.

Immersion Theatre staged the musical favourite and wasted no time in audience engagement, members of the five-strong cast mingling before the curtain went up.

A simple set was all that was needed in telling a story everyone knows and loves, and their spin on it with original songs was full of wit and charm.

There were jokes at the expense of Katie Hopkins and Donald Trump, a great slow-motion fight scene and a catchy rap song featuring the Scarecrow and the Lion, who were the pick of the performances. The way the Wicked Witch of the West was killed off was imaginative too.

The downside, and it is a danger with open air theatre, at times huge chunks of dialogue couldn’t be heard, particular at the side of the stage where we sat thanks to the rustling of trees and the chattering of young ones.
