Wonderful win for Neil after a change in tactics

Not many of you will know of Neil Bourne outside of a small circle of anglers that regularly fish the matches at Float Fish Farm Fishery.

I won’t go into detail about his illness, I’m sure he wouldn’t want me to. Suffice to say he has great difficulty holding a rod and even putting bait on the hook is no easy task.

He has fished matches at Float Fish Farm Fishery for a while now, but despite a huge amount of effort and information he has struggled to make any headway.

However, a change of tactics this year to pole feeder fishing has seen him slowly but surely make improvements culminating in a match win on Saturday in the first George Scally Shield memorial match on the Wagtail Pool.

Drawn on peg 22, Neil fished his new-found approach to great effect beating some very accomplished anglers I might add to put a fine 80lb 4oz to the scales and he gets to see his name engraved at the very top of the George Scally Shield.

It’s a truly wonderful achievement by Neil and I take my hat off to him. It just goes to show what can be achieved if you put your mind to it and if you look, learn and listen.

Second was Dave Schwinger with 71lb 2oz followed by Peter Harrison (68lb 10oz) and Phil Jones (59lb 8oz).

Peterborough & DAA and Sensas Mark One ran a joint open match on the North Bank of the River Nene on Sunday for anglers looking to get some much needed practice in preparation for this weekend’s Division Two National on the venue.

Those looking for bream found them feeding in numbers with matchwinner Mark Davis putting a fine 78lb 6oz to the scales from peg 81.

Not far behind was runner-up Steve Winters with 67lb 13oz, followed by Stewart Brundle on 63lb 4oz.

This Saturday’s match will be the biggest fished on the River Nene for several years with all of the North Bank pegs in use for the Angling Trust Division Two National.

Conditions are going to be far from ideal but hopes are high for some local success on the team front at the very least. We have Sensas Mark One, Castaways AC and Peterborough & DAA lining up to do battle with some very good teams.

Local anglers are reminded not to fish the match length on Saturday, even those that love an early start!

COCK INN

Cock Inn anglers were back at Kingsland Fishery at the weekend this time fishing the Big Carp Lake.

This venue always tests your tackle to the limit and on Sunday it was no different with quite a few double-figure carp putting in an appearance.

First place went to Stan Hotchkiss. He caught 144lb 8oz from peg 10, most falling to corn and pellet on the pole close in.

It capped a good weekend for Stan, who also won the Perkins club match on Saturday on the Cedar Pool at Decoy.

Runner-up was Steve Smith with 131lb 6oz fishing the pole with luncheon meat close in from peg 8. Bob Mills with 95lb 10oz came third from peg six, again fishing meat.

Steve Smith and Bob Mills also won the pairs.
