Thorney shoot down the Stags to win their first ever trophy

Thorney won the first piece of silverware in the club's 26-year history when taking the honours in Saturday's Hunts & Peterborough County Cup final.

They came up against Huntingdon seconds in the decider at the Ron Jacobs Playing Fields and coasted to a 41-7 victory.

Even though the Stags had the strong breeze behind them in the first half, Thorney blew them away thanks in the main to a dominant display by their pack.

They opened the scoring through centre Jamie Jenkins after seven minutes and by half-time had increased the advantage to 17-0 with further tries by fly-half Thomas Deplancke and winger Marcus Papworth.

Despite having second row Martin Lewis sin-binned just before the interval for not using his arms in a tackle, Thorney maintained the upper hand and grabbed a fourth try on 43 minutes.

That was scored by flanker Matthew Holdsworth after a brilliant break by speedy winger Michael Croucher.

And then, with Lewis back on the field, Thorney ran in two further tries in quick succession, scored by number eight Rob Elsey and Holdsworth again, to make it 34-0 with 20 minutes left.

A super solo try by Deplancke increased the lead to 41-0 with Papworth slotting his third conversion.

Huntingdon grabbed a late consolation try with two minutes left.

Thorney player/coach Chris Phillips said: “Normally I name a man-of-the-match, but this was truly a full squad performance including players who had contributed throughout the season but were unlucky not to be involved in the final.”

Peterborough Lions have made their first signing ahead of the 2016-2017 season.

Moving to the Den from National League One club Ampthill is 24 year-old scrum-half Tom Aviss. His other former clubs include Pontypool, Tredegar and Bath University.

Seven Lions players have been included in the East Midlands squad for the County Championship game against Northumberland at Morpeth Rugby Club on Saturday.

They are Del Le Ray Veenendaal, Adam Barnard, Will Carrington, Nico Steenkamp, Ben Howerd, Sam Crooks and Tom Lewis.

LINCS CUP FINAL

Stamford College Old Boys beat Bourne 22-20 in the Lincs RFU Intermediate Cup final at Sleaford on Monday.
