Swanny’s World of Sport - Cheats prosper in athletics

Why on earth is anyone shocked by the latest revelations re doping in athletics by the brilliant Sunday Times Insight team?

I’m surprised that it’s only a third of medal winners in endurance races at the Olympics and World Championships who have recorded dodgy tests.

Cycling has shown that the threat of being exposed as a cheat is far outweighed by the riches and fame on offer. To far too many runners and cyclists the rewards are much greater than the risks.

Is there any risk to runners at all? Athletics chiefs are so soft they let convicted cheats like Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay back into a lucrative sport at the earliest opportunity.

Drugs convictions must lead to a life suspension. Otherwise they are meaningless.
