SPEEDWAY: Allitt building momentum for Panthers' league season

Dale Allitt wants to boost Panthers' hopes of cup glory and lay the foundations for a fine league campaign during his short-term return.

Allitt’s temporary tenure begins when Panthers travel to Ipswich for a vital Premier League Cup Midland Group clash tonight (Thursday, 7.30pm). It also covers the three Premier League meetings that follow during the next 10 days.

Allitt finds himself back in the hotseat only three weeks after standing down as co-boss due to the fact he was made a promoter by King’s Lynn - but he has now been given special permission to help the club through a busy spell after Carl Johnson stood down.

He admitted: “I always said I would help the club out if needed - and that’s exactly what I’m doing.

“It’s not in the circumstances I really wanted and I hope Carl’s circumstances change so as he can get back involved.

“But it makes sense for me to step in to fill the void for the hectic spell ahead.

“I was very much involved in putting the team together and deciding on the riding order, and hopefully I can provide a bit of continuity

“I’ve also seen three of the four Peterborough meetings so far this season so I’m well aware of how the riders have been performing.

“The win at Scunthorpe on Sunday was great and we need another result at Ipswich. Realistically we need to win there to put the pressure on Sheffield at the top of the group.

“It’s also important we continue to build momentum for the start of the league season in the next few days.”

Panthers go to Rye House this Saturday (7pm), visit Redcar next Thursday and then host Somerset on Sunday, April 24 as they look to start their league challenge well.

Allitt will be pitting his wits against the son of a Panthers legend tonight.

Ipswich are now bossed by Ritchie Hawkins, whose father Kevin represented Panthers in the 1970s and 1980s.

Hawkins jnr also had a brief spell in the club’s colours back in 2005. He moved into team management during the winter and is still searching for his first win.

Ipswich have lost at home and drawn away to Scunthorpe in the League and were also beaten in their league curtain-raiser at Rye House last weekend.
