Joe Perry lost in Latvia.

The world number nine was in Latvia playing in the Kaspersky Riga Masters and suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of John J. Astley from Gateshead in the first round.

Astley, who only turned pro three years ago, dominated from the word go and stormed into a 3-0 lead aided by breaks of 61 and 110.

A break of 73 helped Perry pull a frame back, but another 60-plus break by Astley saw him through.
