Perry, who has only ever won one match at the prestigious invitation tournament, lost the last four frames in a row to complete a 6-3 defeat at the hands of fellow Englishman Barry Hawkins. It was a first Masters win in six attempts for Hawkins.

Hawkins won the first two frames in a row, but Perry found his form to take the next three, thanks in part to breaks of 67 and 84. But it was Hawkins who finished the stronger to take his place in the quarter-finals.

Perry, the world number 10 who hails from Chatteris, said: “I enjoyed the match but from 3-2 up he froze me out. I didn’t get my composure back after that and it fizzled out for me.”
