Scholes on a high in Wycombeafter being picked for England

City of Peterborough Swimming Club (COPS) star Jamie Scholes celebrated his international call with a hat-trick of gold medals in an invitation meet in High Wycombe at the weekend.

The seventeen year-old has been selected for an England team to compete in the Marseille International Meet later this month and he warmed up with a golden treble at the Wycombe District Swimming Club invitation meet.

There is also good news on the regional front for COPS.

Scholes, Rachel Wellings, Harvey Norman, Poppy Richardson, Myles Robinson-Young, Mia Leech, Amelia Monaghan and Anna Blakeley have all been selected to attend the Edinburgh International Meet as part of the East Region ASA team. COPS has the largest number of selected swimmers in the East Region Team.

Scholes’ clubmates Daniel Leigh (18), Kenzie Whyatt (15) and Rebecca Burton (19) were also prominent in the gold rush in Wycombe.

They claimed a hat-trick of golds as well as COPS swimmers returned with 62 medals in total - 28 of them gold.

Scholes and Leigh also won silvers and Whyatt a bronze medal.

Monaghan (15), Robinson-Young (15), Bethany Saunders (18), Mollie Allen (19) and Harry Whiteman (17) were all double gold medal winners with Monaghan and Robinson-Young also claiming two silvers, Saunders one silver and a bronze, and Allen one silver.

Three swimmers stood on each step of the podium - Holly Graves (13), Henry Pearce (15) and Richardson (16) - while Wellings won a gold and a bronze. Ella McGhie and Eve Wright (14) were COPS’ other gold medallists.

Other COPS medal winners were: Thomas Wiggins (18) - three silvers; Brenna Howell (13) - two silvers ; Sophie Griffin (13) - silver and bronze; Matthew Gray (17) - silver; Lauren Harrison (16) - two bronze; Matthew Newson (14) - two bronze; Harriet Salisbury (13) - two bronze; Herbie Kinder - bronze ; Kiara Kovacs (13) bronze; Jessica Mahoney (12) - bronze.

Also competing for COPS at High Wycombe were: Lauren Browne (14), Fabien Brudnicki (13), Eve Burks (13), Cameron Fisher (14) and Jaxon Simmons (17).

COPS head coach Ben Negus said: “These events are crucial to our build-up to the qualification window for the end-of-season National Championships.

“The lack of 50m pools in the East of England makes it a long tiring weekend but the work our swimmers put in during the week gives them the stamina to compete among the best in their age groups.”
