Peterborough Sports need their feet on the ground for a run of big games

Sports beat Boston United 2-0 at York Street in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup thanks to goals from Josh Moreman and Josh McCammon.

It was a stunning result at the home of National North League opposition - two divisions higher than Sports - and the city side’s reward is a tough home tie in the third qualifying round against runaway National North League leaders Chorley on October 6.

Sports need two more wins to reach the first round proper, but first they have to negotiate an FA Trophy tie against fellow Evo Stik side Sutton Coldfield at the Bee Arena today (September 29, 3pm) followed by a Southern League Cup tie at King’s Lynn on Tuesday (October 2)

“It’s a great run of games for us,” Dean enthused, “although I felt we deserved an easier FA Cup tie than one against a team eight points clear at the top of their division.

“But we will give it a go and if we play like we did at Boston we will have a chance.

“The lads did the club proud. We didn’t just go there, defend deep and then nick a win, we outplayed them with some great football.

“They probably treated us too lightly, but it was a fantastic day for the club.”

It wasn’t a bad weekend for Dean personally as he also became a father for the third time, but now his attention turns to his club’s first ever Trophy tie.

“We want to progress in this competition,” Dean added. “So it’s important the players get their heads out of the clouds and be ready to take on a big strong side.”

Key midfielder Dan Lawlor picked up a nasty foot injury late in the game at Boston and could miss the FA Cup tie as well as tomorrow’s Trophy game.

Moreman, McCammon and Richard Jones are also doubtful for today’s match.

Flying winger Matt Sparrow aims to maintain a terrific run of scoring form when Yaxley host Aylesbury in the Central Division of the Evo Stik Southern League today (3pm).

Sparrow has scored twice in his last three outings for the Cuckoos including back-to-back league wins over Sutton Coldfield and AFC Dunstable.

Those wins have moved Yaxley up to ninth in their first season at step four level. They will fancy their chances at In2itive Park against an Aylesbury side with just one win from six matches.

Stamford AFC moved up to fourth in Division One East of the Evo Stik Northern League following a 4-0 derby thumping of Spalding United on Tuesday.

Stamford travel to Ossett United today when the winless Tulips host high-fliers Morpeth Town. Wisbech Town are at at Pickering Town.
