A slow start ensured Peterborough Lions would slip to a fourth straight National League defeat on Saturday (September 22).

Lions are propping up the Division Two North table after a 36-7 defeat at the hands of Stourbridge at Solstice Park.

They were 24-0 down at the break before scoring the first points of the second-half with a penalty try.

That led to a spirited second-half display, but ultimately the improvement was to no avail against a team with vast National League experience.

“Stourbridge have been a National League side since they were formed in the 1980s,” Lions chairman Andy Moore stated. “They haven’t come from where we have been.

“And these things matter. At this level you get punished for your mistakes whether they happen at the start of the game or at the end.

“We started this game very slowly which was very disappointing, but we are still trying to bed this team in and it will happen from time to time.

“We were much improved in the second-half and deserved the penalty try as we were pounding away at their line.

“It’s tough to have no points after four games, but there are four teams who haven’t won yet and we have been playing the top teams so we are not getting downhearted.”

Lions handed a debut to England under 20 fly half Ewan Starling on Saturday. He has been signed on loan from St Albans based Old Albanians. Starling played for England in an international in Georgia last summer.
