Darren Fox is to be re-united with his old school chum as the Peterborough Lions begin to build a squad capable of winning National League promotion.
Darrell Ball, who played with Fox almost 20 years ago in the Stanground College team, is the first summer signing to be announced by the Bretton-based club and his arrival will add an abundance of quality and experience to the Lions pack.
“It’s an excellent addition - the perfect signing,” said head coach Fox.
“I know Darrell very well - we went to the same school and played in the same team as kids - and I know exactly what he’ll bring to the table.
“He’s an honest, hard-working individual who believes in training hard and playing hard. We’re of the same ilk, Darrell and I, and we’ll give everything to get this team promoted.”
The Lions narrowly missed out on a promotion play-off last term when finishing third in their debut season in National League Division Three.
The addition of Ball will certainly improve their lineout play - an area that sometimes let Lions down during last season.
Fox added: “Darrell has played in the second row for big clubs like London Welsh, London Scottish and Rosslyn Park, and he knows all there is to know about the lineout. He’ll help me out on the coaching side with his expert knowledge.
“He’s also been captain of the Army side for six or seven years and skippered them to victory over the Navy in front of more than 70,000 fans at Twickenham last season and he was man-of-the-match.
“Needless to say he’s got great leadership qualities to go with a wealth of experience.”
Ball, who is a sergeant in the Royal Engineers based at RAF Wyton, joins the Lions from Shelford and is likely to be one of many quality signings in the next few weeks.
