Heavy cup defeats for Peterborough Sports and Yaxley, late goals save Wisbech and Spalding, Stamford throw it away, hat-trick of wins for March

There were heavy Evo Stik Southern League Cup defeats for Peterborough Sports and Yaxley last night (October 2), with the latter hammered 9-0 by Biggleswade Town at In2itive Park.

Both local teams were playing opponents from a higher division with Peterborough Sports suffering a first competitive defeat of the season, 4-1 at King’s Lynn where they conceded two late goals to give the final scoreline a flattering look.

Lynn led 2-0 at the break before Jake Newman pulled a goal back for Sports in the 53rd minute. Sports have a much more important knockout tie this Saturday (October 6) when they host National North League leaders Chorley in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup at the Bee Arena, a match to be screened live on the BBC website (kick-off 12.30pm).

Yaxley have now conceded 16 goals in two home games in four days.

Wisbech Town and Spalding United both scored late goals to claim a point apiece in the Evo Stik Northern Division One East last night. The Fenman looked doomed when hosts Belper Town opened the scoring in the 83rd minute, but Jon Fairweather equalised in the 90th minute.

Spalding are still without a win after 10 league games, but they fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at home to Carlton. That was a seventh draw of the season for the next-to-bottom Tulips whose goals were scored by Alfa Jalo and Jack Brownell.

Wisbech are now 16th in the 20-team division, but promotion hopefuls Stamford AFC are treading water in eighth. They took the lead at Gresley through a first-half strike from Joe Burgess, but conceded twice in five late second-half minutes to lose 2-1.

It’s three wins in a row in all competitions for March Town as they saw off Fakenham 2-0 in the Eastern Counties Division One Cup with goals from Rob Conyard and Gav Cooke, but Wisbech St Mary are out after a 2-1 loss at Swaffham Town.

March manager Brett Whaley said: “Far too direct first half, but the response to information we gave them at half-time was excellent. Plenty to improve on but it’s clear to see we are moving in the right direction.”

Blackstones are in United Counties League Cup action at home to fellow Division One side Melton Town tonight (October 3).
