Roger races round Rutland Water to claim English silver

Peterborough Triathlon Club (PACTRAC) veteran Roger Canham was an English Championship silver medallist at the weekend.

He was competing in the 16th edition of the Vitruvian Triathlon, a leading event on the UK calendar held at Rutland Water, and this year it incorporated the 2018 Triathlon England National Middle Distance Championships.

It meant top quality opposition from all over the country turned up for the event to tackle a 1900-metre swim on Rutland Water at Whitwell, a 53-mile bike ride round Oakham, Uppingham, Morcott, Ketton and Empingham, and finally a 13.1-mile run to Normanton church and back, twice.

It was a tough event, with 30 non-finishers, but Canham came away with second place in his 50-54 age group.

PACTRAC’s Dave Patmore-Hill competed in the Isuzu Ironman 70.3 World Championships in South Africa.

Almost 3,000 (2,800) athletes had qualified for this event, which saw some fierce competition, particularly at the head of affairs.

The first three home were all Olympic medallists with Alistair Brownlee finishing second overall behind Jan Frodeno but ahead of Javier Gomez.

The distances were swim 1900 metres, bike 56 miles and run 13.1 miles and Patmore-Hill was 1,446th in 5:06:48 (age group 132nd).
