Women aged 17 and over are being invited to join the Peterborough Royals, who aim to offer junior, youth and non-contact teams within the next three years.

One of the driving forces behind the idea is Mark Kerr, who also founded and ran the successful Peterborough Saxons men’s team from 2004 to 2011 and who played for their precurser, the East Midland Saxons, since 2002.

The Royals though will be an entirely new, independent organisation.

Kerr said: “American Football is a unique way to get active with positions to suit all shapes, sizes and fitness levels, it is more accessible than many other sports.”

The number of women’s teams has grown by 80 per cent in the past year.

The Great Britain team, established in 2012 and currently ranked second in Europe, offers an attainable goal for anyone aspiring to compete at an elite level.

Kerr is being joined in the project by a group with over 30 years experience and a proven track record in launching and developing successful clubs.

They are looking to talk to anyone interested in getting involved, on or off the field.

“Playing American Football is great fun,” said a club spokesperson, “but it takes a committed team of people behind the scenes to get us there in the first place.”
