Props return to bolster Borough

Two former first team players at Borough will make a welcome return to the squad for the trip to Old Northamptonians in Midlands Division One (East) on Saturday (September 15).

Sam Cowell has rejoined the club after a brief spell away at Oundle while Daniel O’Connell is back playing again after concentrating all his efforts on coaching within the club’s Academy for a couple of years.

They are both prop forwards and that’s a department where Borough are short-handed at present due to injury and unavailability.

O’Connell will actually start Saturday’s game with Cowell on the bench.

Borough will be keen to get back to winning ways against an ONs side who have lost both their opening matches.

Borough won their first match 30-5 against Northampton Old Scouts and were then pipped 22-19 last week at Oadby Wyggestonians.

The Leicestershire side nicked victory in a game that could have gone either way with a deciding try 10 minutes from the end.

“It was a really good game between two evenly-matched sides. We got a losing bonus point and we played well. We’re far from downhearted,” said vice-chairman Archie Bennett.

Zac McClure (2) and Matt Newman scored tries for Borough while players to catch the eye were Newman, McClure, Rob Moulds, Ryan Morris on his return from Peterborough Lions, and Tanaka Kanhukamwe.

Oundle are top of Midlands Division One after winning 48-19 at home to West Bridgford. Their try-scorers were Chris Humphrey, Robb Shingles, Will Carrington (2), Craig Tandy, Louie Davis and Gabriel Smithson.

Oundle visit second-placed Paviors on Saturday.

Borough Ladies ran out comfortable 45-5 winners against Shelford in their first league match of the season on Sunday.

Jess Wilson (2), Zoe Wright, Sarah Ashton, Sarah Winder and Jess Robinson scored tries and a penalty try was awarded just as Steph Warlow touched down. Players of the match were Wilson and Robinson.

Borough Juggers were thumped 45-19 by Deeping Dinosaurs. Their points came through tries by Dale Abblett, Pete Hale and Tony Hill and two conversions from Ade James.
