Vernon needed a good finish in the Standard Distance Triathlon at Oundle last weekend (July 17) to become club champion and he achieved it in style thanks to a superb run.

The race was held over a 1800-yard swim in Oundle pool, a 30-mile bike and a 6.25-mile run.

Abi Schofield led out of the water, 90 seconds clear of Simon Hoppe with a further two minutes back to Rob Hammond.

Vernon was a further three minutes down before hauling 40 seconds back on the bike and then catching Hoppe on the run to pull away and win by 2.17 minutes.

Hammond was a further eight minutes back.

PACTRAC club champions are determined by a series of races and the ladies title is still in the balance between Schofield and Susie Freeman.

Steve Hope or Chris Pike will be crowned ‘supervet’ king.

Vernon maintained his perfect record in the mini-series by winning event number nine of 10. That’s six out of six for Vernon who beat youth Jonathan Oakey by over four minutes.
