Carol Hunter and Jenny Harvey are through to the inter-area finals of the Over 60 pairs following a 17-9 victory over Carolyn Day (City of Ely) in the area decider.

They now face a Kingsthorpe (Northampton) pair for a place at the national finals at Nottingham and a place in the last 16.

Meanwhile, Peterborough are guaranteed a finalist in the area singles with Nick Wilkie and Joe Randall facing each other in the semi-finals.

Wilkie, who earlier in the competition knocked out world number one Nicky Brett, received a walkover from Ross Tomlinson (St Neots) in the quarter-finals, while Randall defeated Andy Barker (St Neots) 21-17.

The prize for the winner could be a match against England star Greg Harlow, the provisional world number four and defending national champion.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Nicky Brett was a comfortable winner in his first round match at the Just retirement World Indoor Championships on Monday.

The world number one from Yaxley met James Rippey at the Potters Holiday Resort in Hopton-on-Sea and proved far too strong for the qualifier, who was making his first appearance on the famous blue carpet. Brett won it 12-3, 8-4 and will now meet Les Gillett in the next round today (Thursday).

DERBYSHIRE TROPHY

Northants Bowling Federation entertain North Cambs in the Derbyshire Trophy inter-county championship at Peterborough & District on Sunday morning requiring maximum points to keep their faint hopes alive of qualifying for the final.

Their defeat away to Lincolnshire last time out put a serious dent in their hopes, so they can’t afford any slip-up this weekend.

Even with wins against North Cambs and away to Norfolk in their final match, they will still probably have to rely on the outcome of other matches if they are to succeed in their quest to top the southern section table.
