Nicholls, an icon of the sport in the UK, admits he thought about it, but with the pandemic kicking in he was left with no option but to turn it down.

Nicholls said: “I did have a chance of racing in Poland at the start of the season and the offer was tempting but with the way things are it would have meant I would have to live over there and self-isolate.

“I wouldn’t have been able to see my daughter and that would have been really hard with what is going on in my private life right now.

“I’ve kept myself fit though and been on the mountain bike most weekends covering lots of miles and actually I’m probably as fit as I’ve been for a while which is pleasing. I will step up the gym work over the coming months and be ready for whenever the season starts in 2021.”

Meanwhile Panthers star Chris Harris races in the Peter Craven Memorial at Belle Vue tonight (Thursday, October 22).

Harris is keen to end the year on a high after scoring 10 points in Manchester at the British Final last month.
