The city side were threatened with relegation after the regular season was halted with just one fixture remaining because of the coronavirus pandemic.

City were in a relegation place, but had a strong chance of escaping because their final fixture at home to Birmingham University was far easier than the one faced by rivals Sheffield Hallam.

However a restructuring of the league has led to an extra Premier League place being awarded which in turn enabled City to stay in the second tier of the English Hockey competition.

City manager Graham Finding said: “We were confident that we would have got the home win needed on the final day, but, when all is said and done we have done enough to survive at Division One level, where others such as Leeds in our league, and Fareham from the South have not, which has reinforced what was a great achievement from the whole squad 12 months ago to get promoted into Division One in the first place.

“We look forward to next season, whenever that might be, and continuing the progression to establish the club at Division 1 level, or above.”
