SPEEDWAY: Brian Clark and Nigel Couzens registered double figure scores, but Panthers lost 42-36 at home to National League leaders Newcastle.

CRICKET: Peterborough Hockey Club lifted the Yarnold Cup with a five-wicket final win over Castor. Future GB Olympic hockey hero Paul Barber scored 27 and took two wickets for the winners.

POSH: Ernie Moss headed the only goal of the game as Cambridge United were beaten in front of 3,443 fans in the Shipp Cup at London Road.

FOOTBALL: Stamford Colts ‘76 won their first ever trophy by pipping Baker Perkins by one point in the Oundle Town sixes Final. The BP squad was: Mel, Landin, Mick Piggott, Tony Day, Bob Jackson, Tom Patterson, Dick Fordham and Dick Hunter.

CRICKET: Alan Tait and Dave Porter of Peterborough Town and Keith Barrett of Market Deeping all scored centuries to top the ET Merit Table batting charts. Paul Cross of Baston topped the bowling charts with 8-49 against Southwick.

SPEEDWAY: Panthers won 40-38 at Mildenhall in the National League to keep up their unbeaten record on the track. Brian Clark top scored for the city side with 10 points.

CRICKET: Off-spinner David Smith claimed 8-39 asBarnack beat Baker Perkins by eight wickets in a top-of-the-table Rutland Division One clash.

CRICKET: Dominic Ralfs bagged 7-26 as Peterborough Town stretched their lead at the top of the Northants Premier Division with a five-wicket win over County Colts. The Young Northants stars were sktlled for 70 on a Bretton Gate greentop.

SPEEDWAY: Panthers finished second in the National Fours Final at Alwalton behind Oxford. They were without Ryan Sullivan who was busy finishing second in the World Under 21 Final.

CRICKET: Adam Milner’s response to losing his Market Deeping first team place to John McDougall was to crack an unbeaten 106 for the seconds in a South Lincs League win over Woodhall Spa.

SQUASH: Stamford’s Tania Bailey guaranteed the biggest payday of her career by reaching the final of the £43,000 Malaysian Open with a semi-final win over World number one Vanessa Atkinson.

ATHLETICS: Wendy Dunn of PAC won three gold medals at the European Masters event in Poland.

POSH: Jamie Day, man-of-the-match Richard Butcher, Simon Yeo and Lloyd Opara scored the goals in a 4-1 home win over Bristol Rovers on the opening day of the League Two season.
