2006

ATHLETICS: Olympic champion Daley Thompson tipped Peterborough AC shot putter Dan Tinkler from Peterborough Regional College for stardom after he won the English Schools title in Gateshead.

CRICKET: Teenage express Jamie Smith bagged 6-31 as Peterborough Town dismissed Desborough for 58 to win a Northants Premier Division match by 170 runs.

POSH: Manager Keith Alexader lined up centre-back Guy Branston to replace Sean St Ledger and was close to signing his former striker Simon Yeo from Lincoln.

CRICKET: James Chambers smashed 266 (17 sixes, 25 fours) for Oundle thirds against East Hadden in a Northants League game. It was an individual record score for the competition and Oundle’s 432-2 in 44 overs was also a team record.

WINDSURFING: Peterborough man Nick Dempsey, who learnt the sport at Ferry Meadows, was crowned European Champion in Turkey.

SPEEDWAY: Panthers remained second in the Elite League after a 58-34 win over Swindon at the Showground. Neils-Kristian Iversen top scored for the city side with 11 points.

POSH: There was excitement as manager Barry Fry believed AC Milan forward George Weah was coming to the ground to persuade Posh to sign his ‘friend’ Ali Dia. Only Dia, and a host of national press men, turned up and he was offered a two-week trial.

CRICKET: Bharat Sports beat Old Deaconians by 51 runs in the Jubilee Shield Final. Nilesh Odedra struck 70 and took 4-31 for the winners. Hitesh Parsana claimed 5-31.

ATHLETICS: Peterborough Athletic Club’s Goldie Sayers won javelin gold at the English Schools Championships.

SQUASH: Stamford-based Tania Bailey (16) won the Dutch Junior Open in Amsterdam to became the number one ranked under 19 player in England.

CRICKET: Steve Best dedicated the best innings of his life to his late father as Barnack beat Bourne by nine wickets in the Stamford Cup Final. Best was 100 not out as Barnack passed Bourne’s 133-5 in 16 overs.

SPEEDWAY: Peterborough Panthers lost 48-47 at bottom club Newcastle in the National League and star man Ryan Sullivan suffered a nasty crash. Top scorer for Panthers was Sam Tesar (16).

1986

CRICKET: Ajaz Akhtar’s swashbuckling 103 wasn’t enough to give Deacon’s School victory over the Old Deaconians in the annual Huggard Trophy match. Barry Morris had earlier struck a ton for the old boys who won by 21 runs after making 173-5.

ROLLER HOCKEY: Girls team Borough Raiders lost 4-2 to Herne Bay in the final of the Queen Mary Cup at Deeping Leisure Centre. Sarah Rowlett and Joanne Squires scored for Borough.

GYMNASTICS: The Bretton Olympic club won the Turnford Trophy with 10 year-old Katherine Everett winning the individual prize.

POSH: Winger Gary Worrall left the club for Carlisle on a free transfer and the following day manager John Wile signed centre foward Les Lawrence from Burnley.

SPEEDWAY: Panthers lost to Glasgow 40-36 and Berwick 50-28 on successive nights in the National League. Kevin Hawkins top scored for the city side in both meetings.

ATHLETICS: Lorraine Silby (Tech College) and Sarah West (Stanground) were the only Cambs medallists at the English Schools Championships in Portsmouth. Silby was second in the shot put and West was third in the 400m hurdles on her 16th birthday.

CRICKET: Peterborough Town clinched their 19th Jaidka Cup Final win by seeing off Pak Azad by nine wickets at Alma Road in July, 1986. Pak Azad 81-4 (Fakir 37, Sajid 22, N. Taylor 3-31) & 78-9 (G. Rice 3-33, N. Taylor 341); Town 108-2 (S. Hair 46no, A. Swann 23) & 52-1 (S. Hair 32no). Man of the match went to Town’s Neil Taylor.

1976

TENNIS: Peterborough City beat Castor 4-0 in the Hunts League. Bob Holmes, John Stanforth, Chris Seale and Paul Chatham were the succcessful City players.

SPEEDWAY: A depleted Panthers team lost 42-36 at the Showground to National League leaders Ellesmere Port. Ken Matthews top scored with 13 points for Panthers.

CRICKET: King’s schoolboy Gary Rice claimed 5-25 on debut to help Peterborough Town to their first win of the Northants League season, by 48 runs over Wolverton.

CRICKET: Keith Bentley bagged 6-30 as Casuals shot out Peterborough League leaders Nenedale for just 63 to complete a 59-run win. Glynn Starr struck 66 for Casuals.

POSH: Winger Tommy Robson was ruled out of pre-season training because of a bout of chicken pox.

TENNIS: Peterborough City beat Longthorpe 9-0 in the semi-final of the Don Brace Cup. The City team was Jim Cochrane, Gill Bell, Eddie Rudd, Kay Lloyd, Brian Hawes and Katherine Knott. The Longthorpe team was John Robinson, Doreen Crook, Charles Poynder, Debbie Gale, Fran Roberts and Janet Boxall.
