CRICKET: Peterborough Town beat Central in a Lord’s Taverners Indoor under 14 six-a-side match. Team: Tom Andrews, Oliver Pinnegar, Ralph Lumby, Craig Hayward, Ian Hair, Chris Sheldon.

FOOTBALL: Striker Carl Griffiths was sent off after 20 minutes as Posh lost 5-1 in a Division Two match at Blackpool. Chris Cleaver claimed the Posh consolation goal.

ICE HOCKEY: Peterborough Pirates players Jason Stewart, David Singleton and Dean Ford were sacked on the spot after a 21-1 home defeat at the hands of Solihull.

HOCKEY: Peterborough Town manager Pete Lambert called his players ‘gutless’ after a 5-1 East Premier Division defeat at Cambridge University. Steve Gregory scored for Town.

RUGBY UNION: Borough won a crunch Midlands Division One relegation battle 36-19 at Amber Valley. John Sismey claimed two tries.

CRICKET: Peterborough Town star Ajaz Akhtar left the club to play for Dereham in the Norfolk League for £100 a match.

SPEEDSKATING: Robert Mitchell, from Princes Gardens, won a bronze medal at the European speed skating short track Championships in Italy.

FEBRUARY 8-14, 1987

POSH: Posh breathed life into their Division Four play-off campaign with a 1-0 win over Wrexham at London Road. Jackie Gallagher scored the goal 15 minutes from time in front of 2,935 fans.

CRICKET: Barry Morris struck a brilliant unbeaten 77, including three sixes in the final over, as Old Deaconians beat Nenedale by one wicket in the final of the Peterborough Indoor competition.

HOCKEY: Peterborough Town came from behind to win 2-1 at Fords in the East Premier Division. Chris Marriott and Steve Gregory scored the Town goals.

RUGBY UNION: Holders Borough were knocked out of the ET Cup 15-10 at Stewart & Lloyds. Johns Sismey scored Borough’s try with Tim Meston kicking two penalties.

FOOTBALL: Manager Barry Cope called Perkins’ first-half showing ‘disgraceful’ after they bowed out of the Northgants Junior Cup 5-3 at Irthlingborough Reserves. Nicky Papworth, Ray Nicholls and Franco Piergianni scored for the city side.

ROWING: A four of Steve Tuxk, Angelo Rizzo, Jamie Rule and Pete Essex won for host club Peterborough City at the Head of the Nene.

February 8-14, 1981

POSH: A brilliant solo goal from Micky Gynn secured a 3-2 win for Posh in a Division Four match at Rochdale. Gynn scored twice and Trevor Quow also netted as Posh fought back from 2-0 down.

HOCKEY: Martin Collcott gave Peterborough Town the lead, but the city side went down 3-1 at Cambridge City in the East Premier League.

BOXING: Mick Leggett, Mark Walker, Ian Gamblin and Nigel Fairbairn were the most impressive city-based winners in a show at Focus ABC. It was Fairbairn’s debut fight.

HOCKEY: City Ladies finished a club best sixth in the East Club Championshipa. Linda McLean scored as City went down 2-1 to Long Sutton in their final game.

SQUASH: Neville Keir, John Rudd, Brian Abel, Heather Simpson and Alan Parsons all won comfortably as Bretton firsts beat Hunts County 5-0 in Cambs Division One.

DARTS: Ken Summers took top spot in the ET League after a win over previous leader Fred Hagger.

RUGBY UNION: Borough were on the verge of losing their outstanding lock Keith Jensen to first-class club Northampton.

BASKETBALL: Alan Wilson set a club record of 40 points as Phoenix beat Crowland in the Peterborough League.

February 8-14, 1977

POSH: Brighton made a successful £19,000 bid for popular Posh goalkeeper Eric Steele.

FOOTBALL: The record FA Vase run of Peterborough Rovers came to an end as Buckingham Town beat them 5-2 at London Road in a fourth round tie. Hugh Brady and Glyn Starr scored for the city side in front of a crowd of over 700.

HOCKEY: Kestrels beat Young Conservatives 4-0 in a big mixed match. Stev eHurd (2), Trevor Andrew and Ivor Ferreira scored the goals and Phil Harrison missed a penalty. Kestrels ‘keeper Mike Batt was also in top form.

POSH: Noel Cantwell’s injury-hit side went down 2-1 at lowly York in a Division Three match despite a rare goal from Jack Carmichael. Winger Tommy Robson impressed as an emergency left-back.

RUGBY UNION: Borough claimed their 14th win of the season as they saw off Boston 9-0. Dave Morgan scored the Borough try with John Williams kicking the rest of the points.

ATHLETICS: Martin Mangan (15th) and Giovanni Rizzo (22nd) were the best local finishers in the Esatern Counties Cross Country Championships in Ampthill.
