Nene Valley youngsters cruise into the play-offs

Nene Valley Harriers secured their place in the prestigious end-of-season Eastern Young Athletes League play-off final with a solid performance at Norwich on Sunday (writes Barry Warne).

Harriers finished third out of eight teams on the day, and were fourth overall in the final standings of a league which comprises 28 clubs.

Team manager Russ Prosser is sure to have some thinking to do before the finals at Stevenage on September 4 after a meeting in which several youngsters made the most of their opportunity to impress as a number of key squad members were unavailable on the day.

Nene Valley were at their best in the boys Under 15 and Under 17 age groups comfortably winning both.

William Hughes and Ronnie Rawlings were totally dominant in the sprints at Under 17 level with Hughes winning both the 100m and 200m. Rawlings who took the B string honours over both distances.

Charles Hughes won both the shot and javelin, with Denzil Mposu first in the B string javelin.

Kielen Spurdens had a fine run, winning the B 1500m.

The Under 15 boys put in a fine team performance with many athletes scoring well.

Harry Smith won the shot, Billy Fitzpatrick crossed the line first in the 800m and Luke Phillips won the B high jump.

William Kong had a great day for the Under 13 boys on his club debut. Not only did he win the B 100m and 200m but his times of 12.9 and 26.7 seconds were quicker than any A string runners.

Freddie Fraser was first A runner in the 100m, and had a day to remember when also winning the 75m hurdles and long jump.

George Harrison won the B shot and Sam Oakley and Kai Chilvers made it a double Nene Valley victory over 1500m.

Alicja Gawronski won the Under 13 200m in 29.1 while Danielle Pusey threw her way to victory in the javelin.

Ella Robinson pulled off a fine Under 15 B 300m and 800m double, and Amber Park won the A 800m.

Nene Valley thrived in the Under 17 throws with Lydia Church first in the shot and hammer and Alex Stubley in the B string discus.
