Joe Perry is through to the quarter-finals of the Betway UK Championship.

The 42 year-old from Chatteris was a 6-4 winner last night (December 6) in his fourth round match against world number nine Mark Allen from Antrim at the York Barbican and now faces Stephen Maguire at the last eight stage.

Perry, ranked 22 in the world, produced some sparkling breaks - opening with an 83 and then compiling a 114 in the second frame - as he forged into a 3-1 lead.

Allen pulled it back to 3-2 with a 135 clearance in the fifth frame but Perry edged the sixth frame 70-64 with a break of 64 and then went 5-2 ahead with an 87 clearance.

Another cracking century break by Allen - a 134 - followed by a 75 in the ninth frame saw him get it back to 5-4 but then Perry got the better of a scrappy tenth frame 77-24 to reach his first ranking event quarter-final since the Riga Masters.

Perry said: “It was a great game, the best I have played in a long time. I felt comfortable out there and played solid snooker all the way through, until the end when I collapsed like a cheap tent. I was lucky to crawl over the line. It’s a big win for me and I’ve got to try to keep playing to that level.”

Scores (Perry first): 83-46; 136-0; 54-64; 70-10; 0-135; 70-64; 87-0; 0-134; 40-93; 77-24.
