The Peterborough Saxons suffered their first home defeat of the season when taking on Sandwell Steelers at Thorney Rugby Club on Sunday.

Both sides had already qualified for the play-offs but there was still plenty to play for.

The Steelers, the North Division’s Southern Conference champions, arrived with a proud unbeaten record whereas second-placed Saxons were determined not to come unstuck on home territory.

A tough, tightly-contested game ensued and at the end of an enthralling contest it was the Steelers who nicked it 28-24.

Bobby Amissah and Chris Arris scored touchdowns for Saxons with the rest of their points coming from kicks by Scott Spearink.

Ariss, Russ Poulson and James Hilliard were outstanding for Saxons in defence while Adam Gumbs, Amissah and Spearink always caused Steelers problems with their running.

Amissah scored what looked to be a winning touchdown two minutes from the end but it was disallowed.

Saxons travel to meet West Coast Trojans in the first round of the play-offs on August 23.
