GYMNASTICS: Louis Smith (below) has finished his season with a real flourish after winning gold on the pommel horse at the Toyota Cup in Japan.
The World and European silver medallist (21) scored 15.6 with a complex new routine to beat Chang Ju Ha of Korea into second with Japan’s Kenya Kobayashi in third place.
And having taken gold at the Glasgow Grand Prix last month when he beat newly-crowned world champion, Krisztian Berki, the Eye star is clearly delighted with the way his season has drawn to a close.
He said: “This has been a great year for me. I started in January with a broken thumb but recovered well to take silver at the European Championships in April, and then another silver at the World Championships in October.
“It was great to finish the season in Glasgow and Japan with two gold medals and a new routine that should prepare me for an important year in 2011.”
Smith’s Great Britain team-mate Dan Purvis also performed well at the event to take silver in the floor exercise.
