MATCH REPORT: Borough keep title push going with a 10-try romp

The runaway Midlands Division Two East (South) leaders ran in a terrific 10 tries, and with Old Laurentians failing to pick up a bonus point in their win at Belgrave, the Fengate lads have opened up a 14-point lead at the summit.

Despite fielding a below-strength side, Borough were still far too strong for the struggling Vipers, who haven’t won a league game all season.

They didn’t play particularly well in the first half, though, and it was only 19-17 at the turnaround.

But after the break they moved the ball out wide far more often and the tries came thick and fast.

Tom Stuffins, who came on as a second-half replacement on the wing, darted in for a hat-trick of tries and so did fly-half Joe Andresen.

Stefan Gallucci and Tom Williams both bagged a pair and Williams addded seven conversions for a personal tally of 24 points.

Vice-chairman Archie Bennett said: “To be fair to Vipers they put up a brave fight in the first half. They kept it tight and it was very close.

“But in the second half we changed our gameplan and cut loose. They couldn’t live with us on the outside.”

Borough’s front row trio of George Stuffins, Aaron Throne and Stuart Day were excellent and there was an impressive debut at scrum-half by Tom Downer.

Borough’s next opponents in a fortnight’s time at Fengate are bottom team Rushden, who were roasted 52-5 by fourth-placed Oundle today.

Stamford lost 38-10 at home to Olney.
