Peterborough Handball Club have won their first East Regional League match of the season.
The city stars beat Norwich Terriers 18-17 in a thriller at Sutton Bonington Sports Centre which was settled with a goal 20 seconds from time by Dan Gammons.
They were a man down at the time as Gavin Meichan had been harshly sent to the sin bin for the final two minutes of the contest, but captain Dan Bird’s superb pass enabled Gammons to strike.
Gammons scored five goals in total, a tally matched by Bird. It was a relief as Peterborough lead 11-6 at half-time before Norwich fought back.
The win lifted them above Norwich at the bottom of the table ahead of the return clash in Norfolk this Sunday.
Peterborough had lost their previous four matches in a six-team league, scoring just 21 goals and conceding 105 in their first competitive campaign.
The side train at Gladstone Community centre on Wednesdays (8-9pm).
Peterborough scorers: Dan Bird (5), Gammons (5), Gavin Meichan (4), Josh Fowler (2), Eddy Hogg, Gareth Elliott.
Rest of the squad: Paul Noble, Matt Hobbs, Ashley Thorpe.
