Joe is Borough's hat-trick hero on a '˜fantastic' day at Fengate

For the first time in four years the city club were able to field four senior sides on Saturday and the firsts, seconds, thirds and Juggers all took to the field at home.

And then on Sunday, there was another full day of action for the Fengate club with the mini and junior sections and three ladies/girls teams taking to the field.

Club chairman Dick Clark said: “It was great to see all four pitches in use on a Saturday afternoon for the first time in four years.

“Wins for the first, second and third XVs combined with a well-attended lunch meant a busy clubhouse until late in the evening.

“And our four guests from Budapest Exiles all got to play a full game as well.

“It was a fantastic day for all involved at Borough and further evidence that we are indeed ‘the club for all’.”

The first team win was most welcome.

After a run of five losses in Midlands Division Two East (South), Borough overcame Olney 36-26 with an entertaining display of running rugby that included a hat-trick of tries - two of them superb solo efforts from 50 yards out - by fly-half and man-of-the-match Joe Andresen.

Winger Chris Sansby, whose pace troubled the visitors throughout, crossed twice and the sixth try came from skipper John Thompson.

Borough seconds also turned on the style. They extended their unbeaten run to 12 matches with a 46-7 win over Leighton Buzzard seconds.

Speedy winger Tom Downer scored two tries while Academy players Martin Ball and Connor Martin both looked more than comfortable at senior level.

Sunday’s Borough highlights were provided by the ladies and the Under 16s.

The ladies beat Stanford Le Hope 12-10 in a league match thanks to tries by Laura Phillips and Anne Sayer, while the Under 16s reached the East Midlands Cup final by thrashing Old Northamptonians 38-8. That came just seven days after the lads had won the East Midlands League Premier Division title.

OUNDLE

Oundle need just one more win to take the Midlands Division Three East (South) title after a 25-17 triumph at Daventry on Saturday.

Debutant full-back Dan Cox was voted man-of-the-match while tries were scored by Robb Shingles (2), Oscar Seward and Eddie King. Shingles has scored 28 tries this season.

LIONS

Peterborough Lions slipped to a third reverse on the trot on Saturday in National League Division Three but it was against title challengers Scunthorpe, the division’s in-form team . . . and it was close.

The game, at Bretton Park, finished 15-9 to the visitors meaning Lions banked a losing bonus point. Will Carrington kicked three penalties for the Lions while Scunthorpe crossed for three tries.

“It was a much improved performance against a very accomplished side who I think will win the league,” said Lions chairman Andy Moore. “We certainly game them a good game and could quite easily have nicked it in the second half when we mounted a lot of pressure, but just couldn’t get the ball over the line.”

Recent recruit from Borough, Sam Crooks, missed the match due to a hamstring injury that is likely to keep him on the sidelines for six weeks.

George Offer, also from Borough, made his debut as a sub against Scunthorpe and showed some decent touches.
