Watford Open winner Jake Peppercorn.

The 14 year-old came up against some tough opposition in the Open Boys event for 13-17 year-olds but came out on top.

The Watford Open, which this year was held at the Gosling Sports Centre in Welwyn Garden City, attracts the country’s leading martial artists and Peppercorn beat a handful of British champions on his way to the final.

There he met old foe Tom Symon, the reigning world WAKO champion from Northampton who had beaten him in previous clashes.

This time though, the tables were turned as Peppercorn emerged victorious to get his hands on the huge winner’s trophy which is three feet tall.

Peppercorn is now busy training for next month’s Irish Open in Dublin, which is Europe’s biggest martial arts event. Thousands of students take part from all over the world.

Hicks Karate School will be sending a full team to Dublin and are always on the look-out for sponsors for big events. Anybody able to help should contact Andrew Hicks on 07974196256 or at www.hickskarate.co.uk.

Last weekend Hicks Karate School had 15 students take part in the Norfolk Open and they gained 17 top-three places. Twelve of the students qualified for the UFMAA British Championships in Birmingham in October.
