JAIDKA CUP: Another victory for bad weather over good cricket

The glorious British summer defeated local Twenty/20 cricket again last night (July 1).

A Jaidka Cup Final full of huge hitting between Peterborough Town and Bourne was denied an exciting finish by the second of two heavy downpours. The teams will now start again at the same venue on Monday. July 11 and that’s a mouth-watering prospect on the evidence of last night’s action.

Town were favourites to win at the time of the final stoppage having raced to 68-1 from five overs and two balls in pursuit of a victory target of 135 in a match already shortened to 16 overs by the first spurt of heavy rain.

But to be fair to Bourne their innings was halted in its tracks by that initial interruption. They were 114-4 after 12.5 overs, but were suddenly left with just a further three overs to bat when a 20-over total of 170-plus appeared well within reach.

Bourne launched into Town’s bowling from the start. Robert Bentley and Jack Berry smacked 16 from the first over and, although that pace was predictably tough to maintain, Bourne stayed positive throughout and hammered 11 sixes (and the Bretton Gate boundaries are not small) in their innings.

Berry top scored with 42, while star man Pete Morgan, who was dropped in the deep early on, smacked four sixes in his rapid 27 before Lewis Bruce claimed his wicket.

The rain break didn’t help Bourne at all though and Joe Dawborn, Bruce and Mohammed Danyaal bowled three excellent overs between them at the death. Bourne lost wickets to the last three balls of the innings and a total of 134-7 was less than they would have expected given their glorious start.

Slow bowlers Balaji Ganesan and Danny Oldham each took two wickets for Town who suffered from bowling too many balls of, what used to be regarded as, a good length.

And then Asim Butt, the scorer of a 39-ball ton in the semi-final, started as through three figures was his target again. Butt flayed the Bourne bowling to all parts to reach 37 from just 13 balls when he was trapped lbw by Bourne seamer Matthew Kidd’s first ball.

Alex Mitchell played beautifully for his unbeaten 25, but, once again in this most miserable of summers, the weather had the final word.
