It should be tries galore for the city sides this weekend

There should be a feast of tries to savour for Peterborough rugby fans on Saturday afternoon.

Both Peterborough Lions and Borough are at home and both face teams at the bottom of their respective divisions.

The Lions, who are on a magnificent run of seven National League Division Three wins, entertain Leicestershire strugglers Syston at Bretton Park (3pm) and should win handsomely.

Back in November, Lions won the reverse fixture 25-6 and should comfortably complete the double.

Syston don’t travel that well but Lions head coach Darren Fox will be taking nothing for granted and will be issuing the usual complacency warnings. Syston did after all inflict a shock 26-19 defeat on table-topping Nuneaton three weeks ago.

Fox says: “Nothing comes easy at this level. Anybody can beat anybody and if the attitude’s not right you’ll slip up. We will have to work for a result just as hard in this game as any other.”

The Lions were in East Midlands Cup action last weekend and won their semi-final against Wellingborough from the league below 64-3.

Young prop George Stuffins made his Lions debut after switching from Borough last week.

Borough’s opponents in Midlands Division Two East (South) on Saturday at Fengate (3pm) are Rushden & Higham.

The Northamptonshire whipping boys haven’t won a league game all season and have conceded 50 points (against Oundle, Olney and Old Laurentians) in their last three games.

Of course the Borough players, just like the Lions, will be advised not to treat the opposition lightly, but Rushden are sure to suffer another good hiding as table-topping Borough close in on the title and a return to Midlands Division One.

Club vice-chairman Archie Bennett warned: “We found out a fortnight ago when playing second-bottom Vipers that you have to work very hard and be at the top of your game to be successful in any match at this level. We are confident of winning every game we play right now but Saturday will still be another big test of our abilities.”

Harry Roe, Michael Bean Johnny Beale and Chris Sansby are available again after missing the Vipers game. The squad will also be boosted by the arrival of Harry Winch from Spalding and a Costa Rican international.
